Diamond Drille has caused a huge upset to win the 2014 Queen Of The Turf Stakes at Royal Randwick today. Jumping at $51 fixed, Diamond Drille won a hard fought battle with Gypsy Diamond who finished second ahead of the classy Red Tracer.

Race favourite Catkins looked threatening at the top of the straight, but never got going and faded to finish 6th in the nine horse field.

The Gai Waterhouse trained Diamond Drille was having her first Group 1 start in a very talented field of fillies and mares that included multiple Group 1 and black type winners.

“Beautiful, Beautiful mare and Tommy (Berry) rode her a treat” a delighted Waterhouse said.

“I loved the way he balanced her when everyone else was going hustle and bustle at the front.

“She just was so impressive; she’s such a good mare.

“I think everyone underestimated her, you just had to look at her price today”

Today’s win is Diamond Drille’s first Group 1 victory and takes the Al Maher mare’s career prize money from $237,680 to over $800,000.

Diamond Drille will now spell before a Spring Carnival campaign.
