Talented three-year-old First Seal has returned to racing in typically slick form without being able to return to the Group 1 winner’s circle, but is offered a great chance this weekend after being confirmed to take part in the 2015 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) on Day 2 of The Championships at Randwick.
Having finished outside the first three just once through her ten start career so far, First Seal returned to racing this time for a close second in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) on February 14th; returning to the winner’s circle in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) before placing an agonizingly-close second in each of the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) and Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) most recently.
Having bled from her nostril following the Vinery Stud Stakes, stewards ordered trainer John Thompson to saddle the daughter of Fastnet Rock for a searching gallop on Tuesday morning and was cleared to take her place in the 2015 Queen Of The Turf Stakes as a result.
“She worked over 1200 metres with a mate this morning,” Thompson told AAP.
“I think once they saw the cuts on her head it was obvious something had happened.
“But the stewards are just doing their due diligence and all is good.”
While dropping her distance back 400m from her most recent competitive tilt, Thompson is confident First Seal will have no issue performing over her pet distance of a mile on Saturday.
“I’m not a big fan of bringing horses back in distance,” Thompson said.
“But there are advantages.
“Coming back to Randwick is a big plus. Eight is a good barrier for her so I am confident she will go well.”
Placing fourth in a Canterbury maiden over 1250m on debut last autumn before immediately returning to the paddock, First Seal broke through for a maiden race win upon returning in spring; progressing to victories in the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) before running second in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m).
