Removed from the gates and vetted prior to the Queen Of The Turf Stakes, Amanpour jumped from the barriers well and was immediately led to the fore of the field by jockey Kerrin McEvoy; setting a good pace alongside Catkins and Sports Illustrated.

Taking up the solitary pace rounding onto the final straight, the Northern Meteor mare mustered an impressive kick and pulled clear; opening up a gap of several lengths when hitting the line in the clear of Catkins; Noble Protector boxing on for a brave third.

McEvoy delivered a gem of a ride aboard Amanpour for success in the 2015 Queen Of The Turf Stakes and said he was confident of a competitive performance as a result of both the race and track conditions at Randwick this afternoon.

“We were happy once the gates opened; we got out nice and clean,” McEvoy said.

“Just wanted to ride a nice, bold race. She’s won over further than a mile and she likes the ground so I wanted to be right up in the van.

“She gave me a great kick turning for home and she’s delighted me today, she’s done a fantastic job.

“She was third-up today and Gai’s been wrapped with her. She ran a really credible race behind Catkins last time in a set-weights race and today was obviously set weights as well but we were better suited out to a mile on this ground.”

Gai Waterhouse was understandably thrilled with Amanpour’s performance in the 2015 Queen Of The Turf Stakes and revealed she was always confident the mare would be right in the finish.

“I’m really excited because she’s such a tough mare,” Waterhouse said.

“We took her down to Melbourne last year and she just was a bridesmaid on a couple of occasions.

“She really put a gap between the rest of the field.

“When she went down before in the spring I said we were going to take her down for the Group race and they said ‘Do you think she’s up to it’ and I said you’re not kidding!”

Yet to settle on a specific next point of call for the four-year-old this time in, Amanpour may return to the paddock ahead of a Spring Carnival campaign geared towards the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m).
