A talented and capacity field of sixteen fillies and mares and two emergencies has been confirmed for Saturday’s 2016 Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick; highlighted by the inclusion of several previous winners at the highest level of racing.
Suavito failed to match the late pace when ninth in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) but will relish a return to her pet distance of a mile and fillies and mares’ company in the 2016 Queen Of The Turf Stakes.
Returning this year for a second win at the highest level in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m), Suavito charged home to finish third in her defence of the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) in her only other start prior to the Australian Cup.
A jockey is yet to be confirmed to ride the Thorn Park mare in the 2016 Queen Of The Turf Stakes, who will require some luck in transit from barrier 15.
Politeness could very well receive the run of the race from barrier 4 in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes and will be tough to beat in the race at the conditions.
Undoubtedly finding career-best form to date during the recent Spring Carnival, Politeness returned for consecutive race wins in the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m).
Given little chance of success in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m), the Street Sense mare more than displayed her class with a huge late turn of foot to post a maiden win at the highest level.
Having finished an agonizingly-close second to Turn Me Loose in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) a week later, Politeness was not suited to the conditions of the Coolmore Classic last time but will represent plenty of value to win the Queen Of The Turf Stakes.
Zanbagh has returned to racing in exceptional form this time and figures as a great chance of success in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes from barrier 6, with leading hoop Blake Shinn in the saddle.
Having twice finished second in Group 1 feature races, Zanbagh immediately responded when transferred to John Thompson’s stables in spring; posting her first win in more than 18 months.
Running fourth in the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) before failing to fire in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) in December, the Bernardini resumed this time for second in the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) on February 27th.
Overcoming a block for a credible fifth in the Coolmore Classic, Zanbagh will carry winning form into the Queen Of The Turf Stakes after taking out the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) in a commanding display on March 26th.
