Queen Of The Turf Stakes Ideal for Zanbagh

April 5th, 2016

John Thompson has been thrilled with the form displayed by Zanbagh this season and is confident the talented mare will line up for Saturday’s 2016 Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick a picture of health.

Zanbagh began her racing career under the guidance of the late Guy Walter and was transferred to the care of Patrick Payne for multiple season before arriving at Thompson’s Randwick stables in 2015.

Returning from a freshen-up for a close second in the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) on February 27th, Zanbagh was unlucky to be hampered for a run in the middle stages in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) but ran on for a commendable fifth; responding in the best way possible with success in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) last time.

Confident she has taken even greater improvement from her last-start victory, Thompson told The Daily Telegraph he is confident the daughter of Bernardini is primed for a maiden win at the highest level in the 2016 Queen Of The Turf Stakes.

“Zanbagh is in great order although she is probably more advantaged if the track was wet,” Thompson said.

“She’s come through the Emancipation in really good order and will be hard to beat this weekend.

“I think the bigger track will only help her and it doesn’t matter where she draws.”

Running second in each of the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) and Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) and winning the Group 3 Keith F Nolan Classic (1600m) most notably for Walter, Zanbagh produced a few competitive results in her time with Payne but was unable to return to winning form.

Taking out the Cellarbrations Wyong Handicap (1350m) in her first start for Thompson on November 14th, Zanbagh placed fourth in the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) but was unable to overcome a strong field when ninth in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) on December 12th.

The 2016 Queen Of The Turf Stakes field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday today (Tuesday, 5 April 2016).
